Ethical Research: Navigating the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Process for Graduate Students

This webinar will provide an overview of some of the concepts related to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and ways to ensure ethical conduct and protection of human subjects in research. It will also guide and support graduate students in the steps of both writing and preparing a successful IRB application and how to respond to IRB clarifications. Lastly, a review of the indications to submit an IRB modification and any additional documentation needed that often accompanies an IRB submission will be discussed.
Objectives
- Understand the significance and role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) in ensuring ethical conduct and protection of human subjects in research.
- Navigate the IRB process through a step-by-step process of preparing and submitting an IRB application, including required documentation and timelines.
- Discuss ethical principles in research that guide IRB review, such as informed consent, confidentiality, and minimizing risks to participants.
- Provide guidance on how to interpret and respond to IRB feedback, including clarifications and modifications, and ensuring clarity and alignment with ethical standards.

Jennifer DiBenedetto is a T32 post-doctoral research fellow at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center/Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College conducting research related to burnout in nursing and primary care. She has had experience teaching Doctor of Nursing Practice Students at Regis College and is frequently involved in generating DNP projects and submitting to the IRB. She is also a nurse scientist at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA and works as a nurse practitioner in pediatrics in Northborough, MA.

The Jonas Scholars program has launched applications for the 2024-2026 cohort, with plans to enhance the program with a greater focus on students who are going to transition to faculty roles. Through leadership development programming, mentorship, and financial support, Jonas Scholars will be positioned to successfully transition from a doctoral student to a teaching role. Participants will learn more about the eligibility and selection process for institutions and scholars, understand the internal processes they should conduct to select students for submission, and understand the technical steps required to submit an application.
Objectives
- Understand the eligibility and selection criteria for both institutions and students for the eighth cohort of the Jonas Scholars program.
- Evaluate a scholar selection process to help but forward students most aligned with the goals of the Jonas Scholars program.
- Identify how to submit an application to the Jonas Scholars program through the application platform.

Dawn Mueller-Burke, PhD, CRNP, NNP-BC

Dr. Mueller-Burke has a clinical focus in the Neonatal Intensive Care arena where she spent most of her career as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) PhD program with a focus in neonatal neurophysiology. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in a developmental genetics laboratory with a focus in stem cell biology. Her research sought to better understand neonatal brain injury and to identify potential interventions, including hypothermia and stem cell therapy to improve outcomes after neonatal brain injury. She shifted her focus to leadership and educational-based endeavors once joining the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 2004 where she teaches across degree programs, specifically in the NNP program. She is nationally certified as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, with a per diem practice in the NICU at the University of Maryland Medical Center. In 2011 she served as the Faculty Chair of the DNP Transition Task Force incorporating the AACN Essentials, leading all the APN Master’s specialties at UMSON to the doctorate (DNP) beginning Fall 2014. She is currently the Chair of the New Essentials Curricular Revisions Taskforce at UMSON, with a targeted implementation of the graduate programs in the Fall of 2024.

Marta Okoniewski, MPA, is the Director of Student Engagement at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). She led the development and launch of the GNSA, a national network providing high value programs, services, and resources to nursing students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs. Prior to joining AACN, Ms. Okoniewski worked as the Program Coordinator at New York University College of Nursing within the Academic and Clinical Affairs department. She received her master’s in public administration from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Scranton.
